A great moderate ride on varied terrain
An easy ride to get to
Awesome views into Arches National Park
Klondike
- Many riders on their first trip to
Moab choose to do the Klondike ride. It is appealing
in that it is just a short drive out of moab (about
17 miles) and doesn't require a four-wheel drive
vehicle. The ride itself is moderate, and is about
14.5 miles. You'll be riding first on dirt roads
before you get to the slickrock. It is not a hugely
difficult ride in terms of aerobic activity, but
you should be in decent shape before tackling
this ride.
The
first 11 miles or so is either dirt or gravel
road. This will get you warmed up for the slickrock
at the end of the ride. It is a gradual uphill
most of the way (of course, this means it is mostly
downhill on the way back - weeee!). Once you get
to the slickrock, there are several places where
you will see dinosaur tracks in the rocks. The
climb on the slickrock is moderate with a few
pitches to conquer. Once you are at the top, you'll
need to dismount your bike and take a short hike
to a spectacular viewing area looking into Arches
National Park.
The
trailhead is located a little over 17 miles north
on Hwy. 191. Just after mile marker 142, go about
a half mile to the dirt road signed for Klondike
bluffs. You should see other vehicles here, but
if not, it is pretty obvious.
This
ride is not the most difficult that Moab has to
offer, but we still want to make sure that you
take more water than you will actually use. It
can be strenuous, and the Moab desert heat can
make the easiest of rides a grueling fight for
life. We also recommend that you take snacks and
even a lunch. The Arches view area at the top
of the ride makes for a great place to hang out
and have a sandwich!
And
of course, the best way to enjoy Moab and the
best rides it has to offer is by coming along
