 The
Grand Staircase - The Grand Staircase is
a mountain biker's scenic wonderland. The trip takes
place in central Utah and there's not much around
except one of the world's largest folds in the earth's
crust. So what this means is no people and stunning
geology. We will ride above the Escalante River
canyon where mounds of pure white slickrock drop
away from both sides of our road,resulting in the
name "hogback". The road itself is an
engineering feet and the canyons surrounding inspire
a sense of being truly "out there". The
white slickrock is peppered with rounded basalt,
evidence of a subsiding glacier thousands of years
ago.
On our trip we spend two nights at world famous
Boulder Mountain Lodge, home of Hell's
Backbone Grill. The grill is renowned for serving
regionally
based organic food. Having been featured by the
likes of Oprah Magazine,
Organic Gardening and Bon Appetit, people travel
the distance to dine at
this remote haven. Western Spirit has been indulging
at the Backbone Grill
for years, and no doubt your ride will be well fueled
and your palate
astounded.
We ride through the Waterpocket Fold in Capitol
Reef National Park. It is a
100 mile long fold in the earth's crust which created
an 8,000 foot high
step on the earth's surface. Don't worry, it's been
eroded away and the
colorful rock strata has been exposed, leaving us
with rolling terrain and a
new found desire to study geology! We'll descend
through the fold and ride
right to the beaches of Lake Powell.
The riding on this trip is on dirt roads which
are fairly well maintained.
We ride some paved roads also because they are the
only roads is this
beautiful country that go where we want to go. Mileage
ranges from 12-30
with some optional additional riding for those who
ate too much at The
Grill! The
